My Back to School Beauty Tips and Tricks!

Marnie Cohen

Is it just me, or has the beginning of 2017 flown by? It feels like just yesterday I was bringing in the New Year, and suddenly I’m purchasing all my textbooks and stationery for the university year. For many of us, getting up and getting full glammed for a day of uni or school can be a real chore but I have discovered a few simple ways (and a few live saving products) to keep your everyday school routine quick, simple and flawless.

The Everyday Make-Up Routine

From our favourite Aussie Youtubers, I pulled these out as the best everyday make up routines. Dani Mansutti’s is easy to follow, and there is a soft glow to her cheeks for a beautiful and simplistic make up look. If you want to kick it up a notch, I’d go for Shani Grimmond’s tutorial – it has a slightly more intense highlight however both are beautiful and simple for any level of expertise.

A Few Tips & Tricks…

Foundation/Base

On a daily basis it’s rare that I’ll indulge in a full coverage/full glam look – I like some coverage but I prefer to keep it more natural. That’s why I opt for a cc cream or tinted moisturiser from day to day. You can add a bit of colour to your face while keeping the product lightweight and the finish is low key but still enough coverage to keep me going: it’s a win win situation

My Picks:

It Cosmetics CC Cream ($58 from Sephora)

This stuff is phenomenal. Super light weight and medium-full coverage it’s no wonder people go crazy for this stuff! I would recommend a small pump or two to give a nice finish on your skin – you only need a tiny bit to go a long way. There is also an illuminating finish for those with drier skin.

Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Tinted Moisturiser ($50 from Sephora) + Australis Fresh and Flawless Pressed Powder ($12.95 from Priceline)

This little combo is my personal favourite for a flawless daily look. The Tarte tinted moisturiser is light coverage and lightweight, however it has a great colour payoff to leave your skin looking radiant as ever. I pack some Australis powder over the top to mattify the skin, and build my base up to a medium coverage.

Eyeliner

You are going to want something that lasts you the whole day, to avoid your eyes tiring. I usually just put something in the waterline to give my eyes a pop, but nothing over dramatic for my daily tasks and concentrating in class.

My Pick

Marc Jacobs High Liner Gel Crayon ($36 from Sephora)

I know what you’re thinking – this is one expensive eyeliner but I promise it will change your life. It glides onto the lid or waterline so easily and IT DOES NOT BUDGE. I swear the first time I swatched this on my hand I couldn’t get it off with make up remover so I needed soap and water the next day to finish the job. It is unbelievable and I’ve been obsessed ever since I got my hands on it. It is a must have in your collection.

Mascara

There’s only two ways to go with this – something chunkier that will prioritise volume, or individual, lush lashes that will concentrate on length. Either way you can find an amazing mascara. For someone who has naturally longer lashes, I like some volume to give them a heavy appearance (and that saves me reaching for my falsies) but others prefer a lengthy look with each lash coated individually.

My Picks

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara ($33 from Mecca)

This is my Holy Grail make up item!! I genuinely would be lost without this mascara. It is everything – gives my lashes a bit of extra length but intensifies them with mega volume. It is thick and it gives my look a dramatic finish. It has a thick wand so just be careful when coating those lower lashes, however keep a steady hand and you won’t be disappointed!

Benefit They’re Real Mascara ($42 from Myer)

Another great mascara, however more so for lengthening and separating your lashes. This is perfect for giving each lash a mind of their own and really giving you that curl and length that you’ve been looking for. It does have a volumizing effect however not to the extent of Better Than Sex.

Lips

I love a good liquid lipstick for an everyday look because I’m too lazy to re-apply anything more than twice in a day. However I would still say that finding something comfortable for your lips is the priority because there’s nothing worse than crusty liquid lip that’s five hours old.

My Picks

Jeffree Starr ‘Celebrity Skin’ Liquid Lipstick ($28 from PrincessPolly.Com)

This is my go-to lipstick everyday; I haven’t found anything that can top the colour or the formula. I am also a big fan of the Too Faced Liquid Lipsticks, however bold colours can smudge when eating oily foods (and that is the only thing that separates these two, so I would still say Too Faced are a great purchase). The formula is amazing: non-drying and super long lasting. More importantly, if you need to re-apply this bad boy during the day all the layers will blend seamlessly. Also the colour is amazing and it is honestly the perfect nude on all skin types! But he has an amazing array of colours so definitely check the rest out.

Bare Minerals Gen Nude Buttercream Lipgloss ($26 from Mecca)

These are new on the make up scene and they are certainly making a statement! This new lip gloss formula from Bare Minerals has the entire make up world talking: they are comfortable, the colours are amazing and they are not sticky at all. There’s no surprise that they have been hyped up so much – and the colour range is perfect for your neutral day to day collection.

Everything Else

Blotting Paper

Find your favourites and shove them into your purse – these are bound to save your life. If you feel you are becoming a little shiny throughout the day, duck into the closest bathroom and blot your fears away. The perfect way to keep your skin oil free, and still keeps your make up in tact.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder ($67 from Mecca)

When it comes to highlighter, we all love to shine through for the Gods – but for the everyday look, try the Ambient Lighting Powder for a “glow from within”.  The Hourglass powder can be washed over the cheekbones for a beautiful glow that isn’t too overpowering, but will add a touch of glam to your everyday look.

Benefit Hoola Bronzer ($51 from Myer)

The Hoola Bronzer has been at the top of everyone’s list for so many years, and its value never gets old. It can act as either a contour or bronzer and it is the perfect shade to warm up any look. With a matte finish, it is perfect for day to day and a product that will always be a go to.

NYX Setting Spray (Matte and Dewy Finish, $14.95 from Priceline)

Finish the entire look off with some setting spray to last you the day. I personally prefer a matte finish, to stop my skin from looking oily and shiny throughout the day. Having said that, either will keep your makeup firm and fabulous to keep you going all day!
