In this weeks Spring Interview Series we speak to Ellen Munro Makeup about her awesome business, goals and influences.

Tell us a little about Ellen Munro and your beauty business?

I am a fully qualified makeup artist and hair stylist who specialises in natural bridal looks. I have been working as a bridal makeup artist for nearly 5 years now and love (nearly) every moment of it! When I’m not working I’m hanging out with my family – My husband, our gorgeous 8 month old daughter, Abigail, and our Great Dane, Jack.

What made you launch your Beauty business?

I’ve always wanted to be my own boss. As long as I can remember I knew I was going to run my own business – I just wasn’t too sure what it would be! Growing up I was always heavily involved in creative and performing arts but, despite my best attempts, I can’t act, sing, or dance so I found my spot behind the scenes. I decided to study makeup with the intention of going into theatre or television, but when I did my first wedding I knew it was for me.

What are you current goals for your business?

I plan to continue to grow the business and build a name for myself throughout Brisbane and Australia. As I’ve recently become a first time Mum I am enjoying the work life balance that freelance work provides. Although I would like to expand and grow the business and my team within the next 5-10 years, I have no plans for world domination (just yet).

What do you love about your job?

I love being able to express my art in such a practical manner. It’s my creative outlet, but also my opportunity to connect with people and make a difference on what for many people, is one of the most important days of their lives.

What is your best business tip?

Don’t undervalue yourself. Someone will always want you to charge less and it’s very easy to get stuck in the trap of undercharging and overworking. It’s not a sustainable business model and will take it’s toll on both you and the industry. Work hard and know your worth.

What is your current go-to make up product?

I’m a bit late to the party on this one, but Viseart eyeshadows have changed my life. Finally investing in their neutral mattes palette has made me regret nearly every other palette purchase I’ve made! I’m also a big fan of the Hourglass Ambient Light products. They give an excellent natural glow and highlight!

Who are your biggest beauty influencers?

I’m currently instagram stalking Mia Connor and Ashlea Penfold’s work. I love artists who play with the natural look by focusing on healthy glowing skin and using bronze and neutral colour tones. However, I try to get my inspiration from a wide variety of artists as I love the versatility and creativity the medium allows!

If you weren’t in the beauty industry, what would you be doing?

If I wasn’t a makeup artist I would be a pharmacist. Before I fell pregnant, I was studying, pharmacy, and have worked as a dispensary technician since I was 18 (though you’d most often find me lurking in the cosmetics section).
