Emdee Makeup Interview
This week we are speaking with the awesome Emily from Emdee Makeup about her business and Xmas trends.
Where are you based and what beauty services do your provide?
I am based in Pascoe Vale South and provide Makeup & Spray Tanning services for all occasions. However makeup clients do send me packing my kit travelling mobile all around Melbourne. Soon I will also be offering eyebrow threading.
What is the background to setting up your business, and what’s your point of difference?
I watched a lot of makeup artists around me start and then quit… I didn’t want to be one of those with an Instagram page untouched 2 years later. I knew I would really have to work hard to keep things going. I started off driving around quite far distances for peanuts just to get to know clients in all areas and keep practicing and getting my name out there. I remember one Saturday I travelling from South Morang, to Bacchus Marsh, to Hoppers Crossing and then Williamstown… Now those girls from all over will travel to Pascoe Vale to see me, it’s about building a reputation and trust.
What’s your personal backgrounds and qualifications and how does that help your clients?
I have done a few courses, some really good and some not the best, and also ones that I look back on and realise it isn’t something easy to teach. It is hard to tell a student what to do when it is such a creative subject and I personally believe rules should be at a minimum. I find being qualified is an achievement, but I also believe it is very much just a ‘kick start’ in the right direction. It is what you do afterwards that helps clients to really spot you out of such a large crowd. You choose how to differ yourself and no teacher can choose that for you. I think being qualified in Makeup Artistry for Fashion, Glamour, Bridal, Airbrushing, Photography also Spray Tanning & Eyebrow Shaping & Threading; helps clients trust me, rather than having a ‘self taught’ badge on my chest.
What’s your beauty philosophy?
Keep the rules to a minimum, and you don’t know unless you try. I like encourage girls who may not feel confident or are doubting themselves with just a little tweak in their makeup. Whether it be a bold lip or some long lashes, or for some just having lashes at all, they will never know unless they try it! If they don’t like it, at least they now know and it’s not permanent. For some, it changes their face and they love it whether it be for that 1 special occasion or everyday after that. Keep trying new things, it doesn’t hurt!
What’s trending in beauty this Xmas?
This Xmas it’s all about a nice glowy skin!! Still a flawless full covered base for me but with some shine! I also see a lot of my new favourite palettes with lots of warm colours especially in pink/berry/cranberry for the eyes! Personally I have found myself also easing up on the liquid liner and heading more for a nice pigmented gloss on the lips!
What’s your 1 hot beauty tip for clients around Xmas?
If you’re feasting on the big day or days leading up, go for a matte nude lip (less maintenance and more indulging!)
How do you personally find beauty everyday?
Honestly everyday I don’t go crazy, always rockin a nice base, some mascara, clear brow gel and blush. Sometimes a killer contour if I’m feelin it. But I usually save my matte bold lip and wings with lashes for the weekends or when I’m heading to an event myself!
Everyday beauty to me is all about skin care, that’s the key to keeping your everyday makeup looking so fresh, when your looking after your canvas.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Hitting pan & finishing makeup!! While some are shattered they need to fly to the store to stock up on a new one, there is nothing more satisfying than throwing out an empty bottle! (Unless it’s mac of course – back to Mac program means I never have to buy lipsticks!)
How do clients get in touch?
Most of my clients find me on Instagram @emdeemakeup but they can also find me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/EmdeeMakeup !
